Goal Setting - A Journey to Success

In the current COVID pandemic situation, though it has disturbed our daily working routines, it has also some positive sides that we must consider. As we all stay home due to Corona and Lockdown, it has given all of us a lot of extra time that allowed us to work on aspects of life that we mostly ignored.

I decided to use the extra time positively and keep myself away from all the Negativity. I tried to refrain from certain activities including the Political Stuffs and watching Corona news on Television. Instead, I Spend time recalling my childhood memories by watching Ramayan, Mahabharat, and Byomkesh Bakshi. Spend a lot of Quality time with family and in some physical activities at home like Gully-cricket and Yoga.

Goal Setting

My FB and Twitter time also increased drastically. One such day, I came across an Ad on Facebook that changed my life. It was about a Training Program on How to run your Business? It was 4 Hrs. Training Program for just 99 Bucks. I subscribed to it and found it to be a game-changer for me. Immediately after the training, I subscribed to its next level which was 3-day long training costing 10K. It helped me a lot to have Clarity in my Personal and Professional life. Next few months I invested more in myself by taking more than 10 Training programs with different Indian and International Coaches.

As things started getting better, I decided to share my learnings in form of a series of blog posts. Here goes my First blog on How to Set on a Jurney to Success

The most important part of all of these training Sessions is Goal Setting. It’s the common starting point for all training programs. Goal setting gives Clarity, Direction, and more meaning to your Life. Life without Goals is like a boat in the deep sea without any rudder and you have no control over where you are heading. With proper goals, you will try to give direction to your life and have the focus on something.

"If you’re bored with life – you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things – you don’t have enough goals." –Lou Holtz

In this blog today, I will discuss How can you set your goals? We will explore ways and that can help you to set a meaningful goal in your life.

What is Goal Setting? Is it really worth it?

Having goals that we are passionate about gives us something to look forward to every morning. Not having goals in life, is an excellent recipe for trivial or an average living.

Goals are the first step towards planning for the future, and play a fundamental role in the development of skills in various aspects of life, from work to relationships and everything in between. They are the target at which we aim our proverbial arrow.

Understanding the importance of goals and the techniques involved in setting achievable goals paves the way for success.

How to Set Your Goals? 3 Golden Rules

To make things easier and effective for all, I have broken this process to below 3 simple and effective rules:

  1. Set Your Goals Big
"Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" - Napoleon Hill

Set a Challenging and Inspiring Goal that Inspires and Motivates you. When you are setting up your goal, don’t think about how you will achieve the same, focus on how far you can dream about. When you dream big and shoot for the moon, you are forcing yourself to get out of your comfort zone.

"The great danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark." –Michelangelo

  1. Use a SMART Framework

Set SMART Goals for yourself that must be realistic and achievable for you. So whenever you are setting your Goals, ensure the following techniques:

  • Simple or Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time-Bound

Setting Specific or Simple Goals

Your goals must be simple and well-defined. Complex, Vague or generalized goals are ineffective because they don't provide the required Clarity and Direction. Simple and Specific Goals with themselves show you the path. Goals should be simple so that you can easily explain the same to a Kid or your Grandmother :).

Setting Measurable Goals

The outcome of your Goal should be a Number or Boolean (Yes/No).

If your goal is simply defined as "Reduce Weight", how will you know if you have achieved the same or not? So “Reduce Weight by 10 KG” is a much better Goal.

Setting Attainable Goals

A goal should scare you a little and excite you a lot – Joe Vitale

Always set your Goal Challenging and Outside your comfort zone, but ensure that the same is Achievable. Setting and Achieving a Non-Challenging Goal will do no good. Whereas, once you Achieve a Challenging Goal, this will boost your Confidence and will push you to work harder if you have not even achieved 100%. But Unrealistic Goals that you have no hope of achieving will demoralize you and erode your confidence.

Setting Relevant Goals

Goals should be relevant to your life and meaningful to your life. It should inspire you and you should enjoy the journey or the process of achieving the same.

Setting Time-Bound Goals

A Goal without a timeline is just a dream – Robert Herjavec

Your goals have to be time-bound. Any Goal without the time dimension is an incomplete Goal. Reducing Weight by 10 KG is an incomplete Goal unless you mention by when. Thus a correct Goal will be to Reduce Weight by 10 KG in 6 Months

Always Set SMART Goals. Practice this in your daily day to day activities.

  1. Breaking Down your Goals

It’s always become easy to express yourself when you break down your thoughts. Even for Goal setting, break your goals into small milestones. You can break your goals based on duration like:

  • Long Term Goal - A Goal that you wanted to achieve in your life or in 10 years
  • Mid Term Goal - A Goal that you wanted to achieve in 2-5 years
  • Short term Goal – A Goal that you wanted to work on immediately and achieve in the next quarter or in a years’ time

The duration can vary from person to person and you set your Goals.

You can also break and set your Goals based on the below types:

  • Business / Career Goals
  • Wealth / Finance Goals
  • Family Goals / Relationship Goals
  • Health Goals
  • Recreation Goals
  • Learning Goals, Etc.

The List can go longer. Set Goals in your life for each aspect of your life.

Conclusion:

Goal setting is the most important part of your success roadmap. Every individual should set their goals. Only by your goal setting, you can start your journey to achieving your goals and dreams and ultimately become a successful person in your life.

"A goal is not always meant to be reached; it often serves simply as something to aim at." –Bruce Lee
